Lock 57 The Romping Donkey

Lock Post.jpg (164656 bytes)

Lock 57 Canalside Restaurant is a fine old fully refurbished 18th Century building overlooking Lock 57 on the bustling Trent & Mersey Canal. The new restaurant seats up to 50, with an additional licensed patio eating area for 30 on the lockside itself for when the weather’s warmer. The views from the 1st floor restaurant over the canal, the lock and the rolling Cheshire countryside are simply superb. During the season, some 60 boats a day go through the adjacent lock, making the new restaurant a vibrant and very picturesque place to be.
Lock 57 serves breakfasts, an all-day menu, lunches and evening meals offering a wide and ever-changing choice of dishes from around the world as well as old English favourites and a roast lunch every Sunday 12 noon to 2.30.
James Brindley, 1716-1772, Father of the Waterways and the engineer responsible for the Trent & Mersey Canal and many other major canal routes across the country. Started in 1766 and completed in 1777, the Trent and Mersey Canal links the Bridgewater Canal near Runcorn with the River Trent 93 miles away. It was one of the earliest major canals in the country. Brindley sadly did not live to see the opening of his greatest achievement.

The Canal Centre at Hassall Green lies halfway up (or down) the section known as The Cheshire Locks or "Heartbreak Hill", the thirty two locks that lift the canal from the Cheshire Plain to the start of the Pennines at Harecastle Hill nearby. On a clear day you can see the 17th century folly on top of Mow Cop to the South East.

Construction of these premises started at the same time as the canal, and the Navigators who built the canal were paid in tokens which could only be exchanged in the Canal Company shop here. These premises have catered for working boatmen and leisure boats continually for more than two hundred and thirty years; at one time they used to house the local bakery and the stables for the horses used to pull the laden barges.

Serving homemade and freshly cooked meals daily. The menu includes Pasta, Fish, Chicken, Beef and Steak dishes.

Vegetarian options are available. All cooked to your preference. Children also catered for.
